Supporters of former acting governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, popularly known as UTC, have asked him to contest the Taraba North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The call was made at a gathering organised in his honour, where the stakeholders urged him to join the race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The chairman of the occasion, Oliver Wuborn, who was represented by Babangida Wambai, said the appeal was based on Umar’s track record in governance, particularly his contributions to peace, development and representation during his time in office as the acting governor of the state.
Also, the secretary of the UTCiya Amanna Foundation, Comrade Junaidu Gavy Yahwe, called on the stakeholders across the zone to support Umar’s potential candidacy, describing him as a leader committed to social justice and inclusive governance.
“We are here to make a passionate appeal to Alhaji Garba Umar to contest for the Taraba North Senatorial seat under the APC.
“His supporters have come out in large numbers to demonstrate their confidence in his leadership,” Yahwe said.
He added that the foundation, which supported Umar during his tenure, was willing to purchase the party’s nomination form should he agree to contest.
According to Yahwe, Umar’s brief stay as acting governor left a lasting impact despite political challenges that limited his administration.
“He touched many lives and demonstrated capacity in leadership. We believe he should step forward to represent the people at the Senate,” he added.
In his response, Umar thanked the people of Taraba North for their confidence in him, noting that the show of support reflected their assessment of his past service.
“I am happy that they recognise what I have done and believe in my ability to represent them. I am encouraged by their willingness to support my aspiration,” he said.
