UNIBEN Alumni Urge Greater Diaspora Role In Governance, Nation Building

Nigerians in the diaspora have been urged to play a more active role in governance, youth development and public accountability as the University of Benin Alumni Association North America (UBAANA) marked its 20th anniversary reunion in Massachusetts, United States.

The call came as alumni, public officials, academics, traditional rulers and professionals examined how Nigerians abroad can leverage their expertise, professional networks and resources to drive sustainable development and strengthen institutions back home.

Speaking during an interactive leadership session, the member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Famous Osawaru, said the diaspora remains one of Nigeria’s greatest assets and should collaborate more closely with leaders at home to advance good governance and national development.

He said the knowledge, experience and global exposure of Nigerians abroad are critical to addressing the country’s development challenges, urging greater involvement in public service, youth mentorship and initiatives that promote transparency, accountability and inclusive growth.

The reunion brought together University of Benin graduates from across North America to discuss leadership, education, innovation and sustainable development, while celebrating two decades of the association’s existence.

Participants also explored how alumni associations can influence public policy, strengthen civic engagement and support development initiatives in Nigeria through strategic partnerships and mentorship.

Delivering the keynote address, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief (Dr.) Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, challenged alumni to embrace visionary leadership, institutional development and strategic philanthropy.

He urged graduates to move beyond individual success by investing collectively in projects that would strengthen the University of Benin and create lasting value for future generations.

Innovation featured prominently during the reunion as Canada-based technology entrepreneur and University of Benin alumnus, Mike Okoli, unveiled SabiPT, an Afrocentric artificial intelligence platform designed around African languages, cultures and lived experiences. The presentation sparked discussions on the role of artificial intelligence in education, entrepreneurship and socio-economic development across the continent.

The association also honoured distinguished alumni for excellence in their respective fields. Chief (Dr.) Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, SAN, received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Law and Leadership, while H.I.M. Professor Fuankem Achankeng I was among other recipients recognised for outstanding contributions.

In a goodwill message, the vice-chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, SAN, commended UBAANA for its sustained support for the institution and urged members to deepen their commitment to alumni engagement and university development.

Also speaking virtually, the Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations, Professor Eddie Erhagbe, called on graduates to strengthen mentorship, philanthropy, strategic partnerships and active participation in alumni affairs to support the university’s long-term growth.

Closing the reunion, UBAANA President, Engr. Osasere F. Osifo, said the anniversary reaffirmed the association’s commitment to leadership, innovation, service and support for the University of Benin. He announced that the 21st Annual Reunion will be hosted by the association’s DMV Chapter, covering Washington, D.C, Maryland and Virginia.
