US Lists 3 Categories Of Visa Services Affected By Realignment In Nigeria

The United States Department of State has announced changes to routine visa services in Nigeria and several other African countries as part of a broader realignment of its visa operations to regional hubs.

The US Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a visa services update posted on its verified X account, stating that routine visa operations in Abuja were among those affected by the new arrangement.

The development affects applicants seeking nonimmigrant visas, including those travelling to the United States for tourism, business and other temporary purposes.

The US Department of State said the realignment was aimed at strengthening national security, improving operational efficiency and ensuring greater consistency in visa screening and adjudication.

The department said the Trump administration was prioritising national security and the efficient use of government resources.

It explained that the State Department regularly reviews its overseas operations to ensure they advance US priorities while maintaining rigorous standards for security screening and vetting.

According to the department, visa operations in Africa are being realigned to regional hubs as part of a long-standing practice designed to promote more uniform screening, vetting and adjudication standards.

The State Department added that the regional hub system had already been successfully implemented in several African countries and Europe.

The realignment took effect on August 1, 2026, with routine visa services in Abuja and other affected African cities transferred to designated regional visa hubs.

The affected locations include Abuja, Antananarivo, Asmara, Bamako, Banjul, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Conakry, Cotonou, Durban, Freetown, Gaborone, Harare, Juba, Libreville, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru, Mbabane, N’Djamena, Niamey, Nouakchott, Ouagadougou and Windhoek.

Citizens and residents of the affected countries seeking US visas are required to schedule appointments and pay applicable visa fees at the appropriate designated visa location.

The realignment covers routine visa services, including:

1. Tourist visa applications for travellers visiting the United States temporarily.
2. Business-related visa applications for individuals travelling for approved business purposes.
3. Petition-based nonimmigrant visas issued to eligible applicants based on approved petitions.

Nonimmigrant visas generally cover temporary travel to the United States for purposes such as tourism, business, study, employment and other approved activities.

For Nigerian applicants, the realignment means those seeking US visas from Abuja may have to use a designated regional visa hub, depending on the visa category and individual circumstances.

Applicants have been advised to consult the latest instructions from the US Mission in Nigeria and the US Department of State before scheduling appointments or making visa payments.

The State Department stressed that the changes were designed to maintain rigorous security screening and vetting standards while making visa operations more efficient.
