Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has responded to the criticism surrounding the nominations for the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards ahead of the ceremony scheduled to hold on Saturday.

Silva, who serves as chairperson of the AMVCA judging panel, addressed the concerns during a recent interview, explaining that the nomination process is guided by professionalism, fairness and industry expertise.

Her comments follow growing reactions from film lovers who questioned the exclusion of some actors and productions from this year’s nominations.

According to Silva, the non-voting categories are determined solely by experienced professionals with extensive knowledge of filmmaking, acting, and technical production.

“There’s a panel of judges—highly skilled individuals who understand film,” she said.

She stressed that, unlike voting categories influenced by fans, the non-voting sections are based solely on merit and artistic excellence.

“The non-voting categories are not a popularity contest. They are about craft and skill,” Silva stated.

Explaining the selection process further, the veteran actress revealed that two separate judging panels evaluate entries to ensure transparency and fairness.

“We have two sets of judges to ensure fairness. Every film is graded, and the outcome is based on an aggregate of scores,” she explained.

Silva also admitted that even she was surprised by some omissions despite the quality of certain projects.

“There are projects I was shocked didn’t get a single nod, despite their quality. But ultimately, it comes down to the aggregate scores,” she added.

Speaking on what makes an award-worthy performance, Silva noted that authenticity and transformation remain key qualities judges look for in actors.
