Villa Complete £38m Signing Of Wolves Midfielder Gomes

Aston Villa have officially pried midfield engine Joao Gomes from Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, sealing a deal that could rise to £38 million.
The Brazilian dynamo put pen to paper at Villa Park on Saturday, ending a frantic 48-hour chase that saw Atletico Madrid make a last-ditch attempt to hijack the move.
The financial structure of the agreement sees Villa pay an initial £34m upfront, with an additional £4m in performance-based bonuses tied to Champions League qualification and individual appearances.
The 25-year-old, who cut short Wolves’ pre-season training camp in the Algarve on Thursday to undergo his medical, becomes Unai Emery’s second major midfield acquisition of the week—following Friday’s club-record £50m+ swoop for Freiburg’s Swiss international Johan Manzambi.
Gomes’ arrival, however, is not merely a luxury signing but a tactical necessity born from crisis. Villa were left reeling after powerhouse midfielder Amadou Onana sustained a devastating knee injury while on international duty with Belgium at the World Cup, ruling him out until the new year.
Compounding the upheaval, creative lynchpin Morgan Rogers is bound for Stamford Bridge after Villa accepted a staggering £117m offer from Chelsea, clearing both squad space and wage bills for this aggressive overhaul.
For Gomes, the move represents a bittersweet exit from Molineux, where he became a fan favorite across 130 appearances since his 2023 switch from Flamengo. Despite his relentless energy and seven goals in gold and black, he could not prevent Wolves from sinking to the foot of the Premier League table last season—a campaign in which he still featured 41 times.
Now, he joins a Villa side aiming to break into the European elite, leaving behind a relegated squad to chase silverware under Emery’s exacting system.
The Brazilian is expected to slot straight into the starting XI for next weekend’s trip to Tottenham, tasked with replacing Onana’s steel and Rogers’ drive in one fell swoop.
