Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the Opposition Coalition’s party, the African Democratic Party (ADC), in a move that signals deepening political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku, in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Monday afternoon, wrote, “When men of conviction come together, power trembles. Welcome aboard, HE Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. -AA.”

The statement, though brief, has sparked widespread political reactions, coming on the heels of Kwankwaso’s recent resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

LEADERSHIP reports that Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, formally announced his exit from the party in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, citing the need for “strategic realignment” in response to the country’s evolving political landscape.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.

He described his time in the party as an honour, adding, “I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections.”

Kwankwaso explained that his decision was driven by the need to align with a platform capable of delivering meaningful change.

“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.

His resignation followed a high-profile meeting with Atiku in Abuja on Sunday where both leaders held what they described as productive discussions on national issues and the future of the country.
