Wike-Backed PDP Tells Wabara-led BoT To Stop Party Leadership Claim

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike has warned the Board of Trustees (BoT) led by Adolphus Wabara to desist from interfering in the party’s leadership, insisting there is no vacuum to justify any form of takeover.

At a press conference held Friday at Wadata Plaza in Abuja, the PDP said the BoT lacks constitutional powers to assume the functions of the National Working Committee (NWC), describing recent claims of intervention as unlawful and misleading.

Addressing journalists, the National Publicity Secretary of the Wike-backed PDP, Jungudo Mohammed, said the position of the party remains clear following the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 30, 2026, which he noted only nullified the controversial Ibadan convention.

According to him, the apex court did not make any pronouncement regarding the suspension or expulsion of party officials, contrary to claims by a rival group led by Kabiru Turaki.

“The judgment is explicit. It addressed only the legality of the so-called Ibadan convention and dismissed the appeal for lacking merit. There was no mention of suspension or expulsion because such issues were never before the court,” he said.

The group maintained that the PDP leadership remains intact under the National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insisting that any narrative suggesting a leadership crisis is a deliberate distortion.

It accused opposing elements within the party of attempting to destabilise its structure through misinformation and disregard for court rulings, particularly in relation to the conduct of the annulled convention.

On the role of the BoT, the faction was emphatic that the body cannot assume executive powers within the party, dismissing claims of summoning the National Executive Committee (NEC) as unconstitutional.

“Senator Wabara, whose tenure has long expired, should refrain from making statements on behalf of the PDP. The only recognised leadership of the BoT is that led by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa,” the statement added.

The group urged party members, the media, and the public to disregard what it described as propaganda from Wabara and his associates, reiterating that the PDP remains a united entity without factions.

It also criticised comments by Reuben Abati, accusing the media personality of advancing what it called a false narrative about a leadership vacuum in the party.
