President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, has reiterated the governing body’s tough stance on athletes switching national allegiance, warning that attempts driven purely by financial incentives will continue to be rejected.
Speaking during the World Relays in Botswana, Coe confirmed that recent bids involving athletes from Jamaica, Kenya and Nigeria—including sprinter Favour Ofili—to represent Turkey had been blocked following careful review.
Among those reportedly targeted were Olympic discus champion Roje Stona and former marathon world record-holder Brigid Kosgei, as Turkey seeks to strengthen its medal prospects ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
“The concept is simple,” Coe told AFP. “There should be a clear understanding that the country an athlete begins their career with is the country they finish with.”
He emphasised that while exceptions may be granted in specific circumstances—such as marriage or political instability—requests motivated solely by competitive or financial gain would not meet the criteria.
“If it is simply about moving from one federation to another, that does not fall within acceptable grounds. We will remain tough,” he added.
Coe also highlighted the potential consequences for national federations, warning that government funding could be jeopardised if countries are perceived to be developing talent only for it to represent others.
Meanwhile, Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo revealed he had rejected offers to switch allegiance to countries including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, despite lucrative incentives.
Botswana, a nation of just 2.5 million people, has continued to invest in athletics despite economic challenges linked to fluctuations in the global diamond market, which contributes significantly to its economy.
Coe’s remarks underline ongoing concerns within global athletics about preserving the integrity of international competition and ensuring that national representation retains its meaning.
