Lagos lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN) has alleged that the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Okey Wali (SAN), emerged president of the association in the 2012 election through fraudulent means.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP in Abuja, Falana said members of the association will not allow a repeat of what happened in the 2012 election.
The umbrella body of lawyers in the country is expected to elect a new president that will lead the association for the next two years.
One of the candidates in the 2012 election, Chief Emeka Ngige, who lost to Chief Wali, alleged that some dead persons’ names were found in the voter register.
Falana said, “Vigilance, as it is often said, is the price for liberty. In 2012, our election was manipulated in favour of Mr Okey Wali.
“Some of our members, who died several years ago voted from their graves. People represented them and voted; so, the election was highly flawed. A petition was written by Chief Emeka Ngige (SAN) and the allegations were confirmed but in the business of letting the sleeping dog lie, we decided to move on.”
“This time around, people are very vigilant and conscious of the election”.
Inspite of my insistence that the voters register be made available, at least, two weeks to the election to allow for objections, that has not been done.
“Though, we have the voter register now, I do hope those who have objections will raise them before the election. Nobody is going to allow any manipulation in this election”.
