About 122,000 residents of Osun State have benefited from Lions Clubs International Foundation Eye Care Outreach within its four years of intervention.

Besides, more than 20,000 residents also benefited from the eye care centre situated at Asubiaro Specialist Hospital, Osogbo where various eye ailments and surgeries were carried out and more than 10,000 eyeglasses given out free of charge.

The Lions Club Comprehensive Eye Care Development Project chairperson, Kola Oyekanmi, disclosed these shortly after the 12th joint management committee meeting held in Osogbo where the eye centre was officially handed over to the Osun State government.

According to Oyekanmi, the revitalisation of the centre was executed by Lions Clubs International Foundation in collaboration with Osun State government adding that the over $500,000 project was aimed at offering ophthalmological, medical, surgical and optical comprehensive eye care services to the citizens and people of the neighbouring states.

Lion Oyekanmi said apart from revitalising the site, Lions Clubs International Foundation also equipped the centre with modern equipment from India and also trained all the staff in the centre in India and Uganda.

Meanwhile, the state government, through the permanent secretary, Osun State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Abayomi Oni, said the state and its residents have benefited immensely from the centre.

Speaking on whether the state government would be able to sustain the centre after the exit of Lions Club, Oni said, “We have done a lot of work to ensure the project is sustainable even after the exit of Lions Clubs International.”

One of the consultants at the centre, Dr Adedolapo Olaopa, lauded Lions Club International for putting up the centre and providing an enabling working environment.
