Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba has said that Nigeria needs citizens’ action in the forthcoming elections, to overcome its present challenges and become great again.
The primate who made this known during an Independence day service tagged; Order of Mattins for Nigeria@62 Independence Day Celebration at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Abuja, said that Nigerians need to participate positively in the present electoral process, pray, and take steps to do the right things, especially as the election campaigns start will make Nigeria great again.
The Anglican primate also appealed to Nigerian youths not to yield themselves to thuggery or be enslaved by selfish politicians who want to get into power by all means, that the politicians who will want to use them to perpetrate evil, will not use their children to do it.
“Therefore, let the youths participate in pursuing peace and seeing that every one of us vote and our votes are defended and will count. I am assuring Nigerians that by the grace of God and the preparations already made by INEC, we are trusting God that there will be a free, fair, and credible election come 2023.
“But we are also asking that the politicians themselves should conduct themselves in such a way that they will do politics without bitterness. The should understand that even if you do not win this season, maybe in the next election it will be your turn. So let us do it with love, knowing that it is turn by turn.
“We also want to beg the politicians to have issues-based campaigns, and not attack one another. They should not use foul language and not attack anybody with words, but rather they should present the things that they know they can do within our resources.
“They can achieve and also tell us how they want to tackle the issue of insecurity, economy, joblessness, poverty, and unemployment, and especially the future that they hold for our youths,” he said.
He further said that Nigeria has a great destiny and that despite her present challenges, God will show up for Nigeria amid the challenges, saying that for every nation on the earth right from the beginning of history, there has always been one nation dominating the other and nations going through hard times.
Ndukuba said that what Nigeria is going through presently is not new, and they are trusting God that for every birth of a new baby, there is always pain, and Nigeria is presently going through the pain of the labour of birth.
“Although, Nigeria and its people have gone through many things from slavery to oppression, internal colonization to colonialism, and all the battles around, even now, we are still going through hard times, in terms of insecurity, banditry, oppression, corruption, and other things.
“This is like being in captivity, and when we look at the scripture, there were times God’s people were in captivity in Egypt and Babylon. But, in all, God has always shown up for his people. So, we are believing that God will show up for Nigeria.
“Just as we proclaimed during the message from Psalm 126, that when God turned the captivity of Zion, they were like them that dreamt. I am believing God that when God shall turn the captivity of Nigeria, we shall have so much to rejoice and thank God for. But for now, we need to engage in prayers and be proactive to get out of these challenges,” he said.
