The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chief Peter Ameh, has reacted to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration that he would consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

In an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, Ameh described Jonathan’s decision to consult stakeholders as necessary and commendable, noting that democracy flourishes through dialogue, reflection, and consensus-building.

“In response to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration that he will consult widely on whether to contest the 2027 presidential election, we acknowledge that consultation is both necessary and commendable,” he said.

“Democracy thrives on careful reflection, stakeholder engagement, and broad-based consensus-building, especially for a decision of such national significance.”

Ameh stated that Jonathan, like every qualified Nigerian citizen, has the constitutional right to seek elective office if he so desires.

“Former President Jonathan, like every eligible Nigerian, has the fundamental constitutional right to contest any election if he chooses to do so. This right must be respected without intimidation or undue pressure,” he said.

However, the PPA chairman argued that political realities must also be acknowledged, stressing that the former president currently lacks the level of nationwide enthusiasm required to win a highly competitive presidential election.

“However, while rights are clear, political reality must also be confronted honestly,” Ameh noted.

“At this moment, Jonathan does not appear to enjoy the widespread public momentum and national enthusiasm required to propel him to victory in a keenly contested 2027 presidential election.”

According to him, electoral success at the presidential level goes beyond political experience and public recognition.

“Success in presidential politics demands more than experience or name recognition; it requires a strong, organic wave of public support across key regions and demographics — momentum that is not yet evident in his favour,” he added.

Ameh further urged political stakeholders and Nigerians to approach ongoing political discussions with maturity and in the national interest.

“We urge all stakeholders to engage constructively in the ongoing national conversation, prioritising the best interests of Nigeria’s democracy and development above individual ambitions,” he said.,
