A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has declared that the 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be a straight contest between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Showunmi made the assertion on Thursday during an interview on News Central Television while speaking on the political permutations ahead of the next general election.

According to him, both Tinubu and Atiku currently remain the dominant political figures with the capacity and experience to lead the country.

“In terms of who can lead the country, it is between Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar and one will obviously beat the other. The 2027 presidential contest is shaping up mainly between Tinubu and Atiku,” he said.

The former spokesperson to Atiku further stated that his years of working closely with the ex-vice president had given him insight into Atiku’s plans and ideas for Nigeria.

“I can dash Atiku some headroom because, don’t forget, I was his spokesperson two times back to back. So there are things I know that reside in his brain and his heart that he has not even told people or the people that are around him,” Showunmi added.

He noted that Nigeria’s political journey since 2019 has involved efforts at restructuring and recalibrating the country, stressing that the coming election would revolve around practical solutions to the nation’s challenges.

Showunmi, however, dismissed the chances of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying he had not seen any convincing policy direction from him, particularly on security and social stability.

“In the case of Peter Obi, I see absolutely zero. Let me repeat, I see absolutely nothing. I’ve never heard of him on security. I’ve not even heard him say anything on social stabilization of the country,” he stated.

His comments come amid increasing political realignments and consultations among major political actors ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
