2027: With 31 States, APC Can’t Be Scared Of ADC –Sule

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has downplayed the rising profile of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the opposition party poses no real threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Politics Today, Sule argued that the APC’s dominance across the country leaves little room for concern about the ADC’s growing visibility.

According to him, narratives about a shifting opposition force are not new in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“At one point, they said the PDP is the strongest opposition to our party, so now it is the ADC. You’ll continue to hear this goalpost keep moving. There’s no problem whatsoever with our party. A party controlling 31 states cannot actually be scared of a party that doesn’t control one state,” he said.

On insecurity, an issue the ADC has repeatedly used to criticise the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor acknowledged the scale of the challenge but identified state policing as a viable long-term solution.

Sule disclosed that the proposal has received overwhelming backing from state governors at the National Economic Council (NEC), with 35 out of 37 governors reportedly supporting the initiative.

“When we sat down at the NEC level to discuss, I think 35 out of 37 signed up for state policing. We agreed to go on with it. I think it is the parameter because it has to go into amending the law, it has to go to the National Assembly, it has to go to all the assemblies at various states. I think it is just the process that is taking time, but as far as we are concerned, every state believes strongly in state policing and Nasarawa is one of them,” he said.

Despite Sule’s dismissal, the ADC has continued to gain traction, attracting notable defections from across party lines and positioning itself as a key opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
