Three people have been confirmed dead while four others sustained varying degrees of life-threatening injuries in an accident which occurred in the Maranatha axis of the Oru-Ijebu Igbo Road in Ogun State.
The accident, which involved a Toyota Camry car with registration number SGM 88 AE rammed into a commercial tricycle marked TTN 117 VV shuttling between the former refugee camp in Oru – Ijebu Igbo in the Ijebu North local government area of the state.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the Toyota Camry, driven by a female learner was on a top speed inbound Ijebu-Igbo when it lost control and rammed into the tricycle in an head on collision that resulted in the death of three of its passengers, while the four others that sustained life threatening injuries were passer-bye and passengers waiting to board vehicles to their various destinations at a bus stop in the area.
The public relations officer (PRO) of the state’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital yesterday, said the incident infuriated the mob, which visited the scene and set the car ablaze.
Akinbiyi said attempts by the uniform personnel carrying out rescue operations to take photographs of the scene were resisted by the mob, who attacked the security operatives.
He said TRACE operatives were able to carried out strategic traffic control in a few metres away from the point of the crash to avoid traffic bottleneck.
The agency spokesman, however, stated that corpses of the victims were evacuated to a private hospital in Ago – Iwoye, where the injured victims were rescued for treatment.
