More than 500 students have indicated interest to participate in the University of Abuja Internship Programme.

The programme is aimed at providing the students of the university with practical experience to help them validate the knowledge gained in the classroom and broadly enhance their capacity to utilise their skills and talents.

The director of Internship and Linkages Services Unit (ILS, Unit) of the university, Prof. Abdulfatai Jimoh, disclosed this yesterday, during a one-day awareness/sensitization programme on Internship and Asolar Home Systems.

The workshop was organised by ILS, University of Abuja in collaboration with Asolar Systems Nigeria Limited.

He said the objectives of Internship Programme of ILS Unit is to provide the opportunity for the university programme to have a more measurable relevance to the society, enhance the employability of the students by providing spaces for them to have a foretaste of the employment needs of society and enhance their skills in this regard, among others.

“The internship programme of the University of Abuja is open to all our students from 100 level to 500 level. What we try to do is to catch them young so that they can marry what they are learning in class with what is happening in the industry.

“We have over 500 students who have indicated interest to participate in this internship programme.

“Today’s programme is to create awareness, to sensitize our students and the university community on the mandates of ILS Unit, which include internship programme opportunity for students, collaboration for academic programmes, and to cap it all, bringing to our environment, Solar system expert, ASOLAR, who is ever ready to share details on their Solar Home Systems and products with us,” he said.

The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, said the university will continue to provide students opportunities through signing of MoUs.

Represented by the deputy vice chancellor Academic, Professor Clement Alawa, the vice chancellor said, “We are doing things that are not done in any university in Nigeria. We are preparing our students to be global competitors when they leave the institution.”
