Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) has fixed April 27, 2024 for the conduct of chairmanship and councillorship elections in the 11 local government areas and 114 wards of the state.
The chairman of the commission, Sa’idu Shehu Awak, announced this yesterday when he interacted with the leadership of political parties and election stakeholders in the state.
He said the commission gives interested political parties 101 days’ notice to prepare and present their candidates for chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state.
“At this juncture, we wish to call on all political parties to ensure that they conduct their primaries within the time frame that will be given to them. We also wish to call on the leadership of all the political parties that intend to contest in this election to encourage their members and supporters to be law abiding and respectful in their conduct of relationship with fellow players of politics,” he said.
LEADERSHIP Friday reports that the state organised local government council polls only once in the last four years and caretaker committees had been running the councils since after the first election.
Our correspondent also observed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the major opposition party in the state, was not present at the meeting.
