Varsity Don Advocates For Strong Institutions In Nigeria

A lecturer at the University of New York, Medgar Evers College/City, Professor Augustine Okereke, has stressed the need for institutions in Nigeria, saying lack of it is impeding sustainable development in the country.

The academic who presented a lead paper at the first annual Ibadan Social Science Conference held at the University of Ibadan, said, “All our institutions are on the decline.”
He said without effective structures put in place it would be difficult for Nigeria to achieve sustainable development, adding that “African countries in particular face very huge challenges in meeting sustainability in every sector.
According to him, “Without these structures, African nations will continue to fail into poverty, underemployment, injustice”.

He said President Bola Tinubu needs to encourage a system of strong institutions that could check corruption, among other social ills.

The dean of the faculty of the social cciences of the University of Ibadan and host, Professor Ezebunwa Nwokocha, stated that the instituion’s social science has deep intellectual and context-specific solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria.

According to him, social science and humanities researchers have what it takes to assist the leadership of the country in navigating the problems confronting the country urging state and federal government to patronize researchers in Nigeria
