The sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Stephen Dawulung, confirmed the incident in a statement last night.

Dawulung said the auto crash occurred around 1:02 pm on Ilorin-Bode-Saadu route, resulting in an inferno that got both trucks burnt.

The statement which was signed by the sector’s  public education officer, O.B Basambo reads”:  On receipt of the report of the crash around 1:09pm, FRSC rescue operatives were immediately mobilised to the crash scene where they rescued five injured male adults to University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the trucks carrying fertiliser and eight passengers wrongfully overtook another vehicle without adequate view of the road ahead and in a bid to avoid colliding with an oncoming truck, lost control and swerved to the side thereby colliding with another truck carrying tomatoes.

“A total of 10 persons were involved in the crash. Five got injured while four others sadly lost their lives.

“So far, the fire has been put out and the obstructions cleared to allow free flow of traffic.

“The sector commander has since directed for full investigations to harvest information that will guard against recurrence.”
