The minister of livestock development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has called on the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) to align its research efforts with the practical needs of the livestock industry.

This, he said, would enhance productivity, ensure adherence to regulations, and drive innovation in the sector.

Speaking during a briefing session with the NIAS management team in Abuja, Maiha urged the agency to focus on translating research outcomes into market-ready solutions.

He emphasised the need to commercialise research outputs, secure patents, and foster direct engagement with farmers and herders.

“In my 19 years as a herder and farmer, managing up to 300 cattle at a time, I have prioritised quality breeding. NIAS must leave the ivory tower and connect with practitioners to address real challenges,” the minister stated.

Maiha also highlighted the ministry’s commitment to revitalising the livestock industry, focusing on modern veterinary services to enhance animal health.

He underscored the federal government’s drive to attract investments, particularly in partnerships with countries like Brazil, to bolster the sector’s growth.
Established in 2008 under the NIAS Act of 2007, the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science regulates animal husbandry practices to promote profitability, environmental sustainability, and high-quality animal produce.

The minister stressed the need for NIAS to ensure its activities reflect Nigerians’ aspirations and contribute directly to improving livelihoods.

“Our mandate is clear—reform the livestock industry through modern techniques, ensuring food security and poverty eradication,” he said.

The minister maintained that the session underscored the ministry’s determination to transform the livestock sector into a cornerstone of Nigeria’s agricultural renaissance.
