The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Electricity Agency Bill 2025 into law, but the coverage area is three states.

The bill seeks to provide opportunities for Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states to utilise other alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydro, to meet the energy needs of their citizens and support their growth and development.

The bill was considered in committee of the whole house and third reading by the clerk, Bashir Diso, during Monday’s plenary, which was presided over by the speaker, RT. Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Highlighting its composition and relevance, the Majority of the House, Hon Lawan Husseini, told Assembly House reporters that upon signing into law, the bill will boost the electricity energy supply to the three states, alleviate suffering and reduce energy costs for citizens, equip small-scale and mega industries with enough business energy, and enable both hospitals and water treatment plants to conduct activities adequately.

He also added that the agency’s structure will include a commission chairman, a managing director, and a deputy managing director. Each state will have three representatives, and the chairman of the board will rotate through the states to serve for four years.

“The managing director must possess: cognate experience, with at least ten years of experience in electricity generation, control, and energy distribution,” he stated.

In a related development, the house called on Governor Abba Yusuf to provide relief materials to the over 200 households affected by the rainstorm last Thursday in the Doguwa area of the state.

Member representing Doguwa constituency, Salisu Mohammed, in a matter of urgent public importance, said the communities affected include Bahuwa, Rain Dadi, Maraku, and Asada in the Ungwan Tshohuwa ward of his constituency.

While noting that no lives were lost, he said residential houses, school buildings and places of worship were affected, with most of the roofs and buildings affected, leaving the people devastated and in dire need of support.

After careful deliberation, the house unanimously urged the state government to provide urgent assistance to the victims to cushion the effects of the disaster and difficulties.
