Speaking at a three-day training workshop on Research for Impact (R4I) and Grant Writing yesterday, the vice chancellor, Prof. Fatimah Tahir, represented by the deputy vice-chancellor (Academics), Prof. Bala Abdulhamid Ma’aji, underscored the critical role of research in national development.

The training, organised by the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation (CERI), aimed to empower academic staff with the skills needed to design and execute research projects capable of attracting funding and fostering meaningful societal change.

Fatima stressed the university’s recognition of research as a vital tool for tackling the myriad of challenges facing Nigeria, especially in the Northeast.

She reiterated SAZU’s commitment to producing relevant and transformative research that directly benefits local communities.

Highlighting the strategic importance of grant writing, the vice chancellor encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity to sharpen their proposal development skills.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Usman Waziri, director of CERI, explained that the initiative is part of the university’s vision to cultivate a culture of research excellence and innovation.

He expressed confidence that the training would enhance participants’ capacity to develop competitive proposals and secure research funding.

A total of 46 academic staff members from various faculties and departments are taking part in the workshop, which is expected to boost the university’s research productivity and community engagement significantly.
