In a message dispatched from Rabat on Monday, the Moroccan monarch expressed profound sorrow at the news of Buhari’s death, describing him as an “illustrious son” of Nigeria who worked tirelessly to serve his country and promote its development.

“I share your grief and want you to know how much I appreciated the working sessions I had with the deceased,” King Mohammed VI stated.

He recalled Buhari’s efforts to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Morocco during his tenure.

The King noted that these engagements had culminated in “the launch of promising development projects that have ushered a new era grounded in friendship and close cooperation between our two sister nations.”

Offering his personal condolences to Tinubu, the bereaved Buhari family, and the Nigerian people, the Moroccan monarch praised Buhari’s legacy of leadership and service, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the bereaved.”

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, at a London hospital after a prolonged illness.

He was Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 who was later elected as democratic president from 2015 to 2023.

President Bola Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning in honour of the late Nigerian leader, directing flags to be flown at half-staff across the country.

A state funeral is being planned, with Buhari’s body expected to be laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, on Tuesday.
