Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru, has said the ongoing review of the laws of the federation of Nigeria will shape the destiny of generations yet unborn, empower citizens, protect freedoms, foster economic growth, and guarantee fairness for all.

Governor Nwifuru spoke at the 3rd Retreat of the Committee for the Review of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, at the Re-Meritona Hotel, Abakaliki, the state capital.

He urged the committee to be mindful that “every clause you refine, every statute you consolidate, every obsolete provision you strike out will echo far beyond these walls.

“It will have a significant effect on the confidence of investors, the protection of rights, and the trust of citizens in their government. History will judge this committee not only by the pages of the revised Laws of the Federation but also by the impact those laws will have on justice, democracy, and development.

“Beyond the technical and procedural, this retreat has a broader vision. The laws you review and revise will shape the destiny of generations yet unborn. You are building a legal framework that must empower citizens, protect freedoms, foster economic growth, and guarantee fairness to all.

He maintained that the country cannot carry yesterday’s laws into tomorrow’s challenges. “To govern effectively, our legal framework must speak to the realities of today and anticipate the needs of the future. That is the essence of this retreat.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his wisdom in approving the inauguration of the Committee, adding that the committee’s clear directive is to “review all existing laws, consolidate them, and remove obsolete provisions that no longer serve the people.

The State governor noted that the retreat is not expected to be an academic exercise but a call to nation-building. “It is about creating a body of laws that reflect who we are, protect the dignity of every citizen, encourage innovation, and secure the foundations of justice.

“The work before you demands both technical precision and patriotic vision. The strength of its laws measures every society. When laws are clear, modern, and just, the people prosper; when they are weak, outdated, or incoherent, progress is hindered, and justice is delayed.

He said the state is pursuing legal and governance reforms that strengthen institutions, expand access to justice, and build trust between government and the governed.

“We know from experience that sustainable development and the rule of law are inseparable. When justice thrives, investment flows, communities are at peace, and citizens feel secure. That is why we have intentionally aligned our reforms with national and global standards.

He noted that Nigeria as a nation stands at a critical juncture, pointing out that global realities demand resilience. “Domestic challenges demand innovation.

“The Nigerian people demand justice that is swift, affordable, and accessible. It is only through laws that are modern, coherent, and enforceable that we can meet these demands.

He said the retreat’s outcome would advance justice, strengthen the nation’s democracy, and secure the country’s future. Ends.
