The National Sports Commission (NSC) has lavished praise upon the President of the Chess Federation of Nigeria, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, for spearheading a much-needed transformation in the sport.
The former Governor of Gombe State and his board were commended for their leadership and sustained efforts in fostering chess development nationwide. This well-deserved recognition from the NSC follows Nigeria’s youth chess contingent’s outstanding performance at the 2025 Africa Youth Chess Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe.

“The Commission applauds not only the results but also the spirit with which our young players represented Nigeria on the continental stage,” stated Hon. Bukola Olopade, NSC Director-General.

“These achievements reflect commitment, preparation, and the development of chess as a key grassroots sport in Nigeria. We remain dedicated to expanding support, strengthening our talent pathways, and creating more opportunities for our young athletes to compete and excel internationally.”

With steadfast backing from the NSC and the Dankwambo-led board, young prodigies including Deborah Quickpen, Michelle Nwankwo, Jason Nwankwo, Zita Agusionu, Olakitan Elegbede, and Adeola Elegbede competed fiercely against some of Africa’s top young players. Across various age categories, the young athletes demonstrated strategic mastery, competitive resilience, and the exemplary discipline characteristic of Nigerian sportsmanship.

Their success was made possible by the tireless support of coaches, families, and the wider chess community, led by the former Governor of Gombe State.
