Engineers of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) have developed a Smart Metering system to tackle energy theft and disagreements.
The device , which was developed by a team of researchers from PRODA won the first position in the research category during the 2026 Productivity Merit Award and end of the year celebration of the research institute held at the playground on Friday.
The device, after final testing , will help to reduce multiple meter usage and save money for investors in the energy sector.
It will also help investors interested in embracing the idea to monitor the usage of energy by their customers.
Addressing journalists at the end of the annual event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PRODA, Dr Peter Ogbobe described the metering device as a unique thing that will solve a lot of problems.
“It is a unique thing that will solve a lot of problems. Each flat will be allocated light based on the amount you contributed and each flat has a security measure,” he stated.
Shedding more light on the device, Ogbobe disclosed that once the money contributed by any occupant of a flat for energy is exhausted, the flat will not have light automatically.
He noted that last year they didn’t have a lot of research team competition but expressed happiness that this year”s competition featured categories in the first, second and third positions.
Ogbobe expressed happiness that dissenting voices at the research institute are reducing, saying they are now working like a team.
He used the opportunity to thank the management and staff of the institute for their support and team work, restating that team is stronger than family.
Overall best staff was rewarded with money and expensive gift items while winners in the different categories of the production merit award were rewarded with money and different items. Some retired staff of the institute were also recognised at the event.
