Pamodzi Sports Marketing, a prominent figure in Nigerian sports marketing, has vehemently criticised a recent media report questioning the Nigeria Basketball Federation’s (NBBF) engagement with a major national institution. The company labelled the article as “myopic, self-serving, and blind to the bigger picture of basketball development.”
The contentious report had suggested the partnership was mere “political theatre” aimed at extending the current NBBF board’s tenure. Pamodzi swiftly dismissed this assertion, arguing that the timing of such agreements is secondary to their long-term benefits for the sport.
In a statement, Pamodzi asserted, “The writer’s obsession with timing shows how myopic his thinking is. There is no best time to pursue a partnership that will benefit basketball. What matters is the deal itself, and the biggest beneficiary is the sport, not individuals or boards.”
The sports marketing firm further accused the report’s author of acting as an “agent for those hell-bent on killing the sport,” adding that the narrative was “not journalism, it is a hatchet job.”
Pamodzi highlighted the structured nature of the collaboration, noting that the institution involved is not expected to revert until the first quarter of next year, indicating a carefully planned process rather than a unilateral promise.
The company, known for negotiating significant deals for Nigerian sports, including long-standing sponsorship agreements for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), stressed that basketball has long struggled for adequate sponsorship. It argued that politicising every initiative only hinders the sport’s progress.
Beyond basketball, Pamodzi’s extensive involvement in the sports industry includes media sports events, athlete marketing, and sports management. The company also organises the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, the first West African road race to receive a World Athletics label.
Pamodzi concluded with a clear message: “This is about basketball, pure and simple. Those who insist on dragging politics into every initiative are the ones holding the game back.”
