Carlos Alcaraz expressed his determination to break his Australian Open title drought and become the youngest man to achieve a career Grand Slam, stating that this is his primary goal for 2026.

The world No. 1 from Spain is among the title favourites, alongside his great rival and two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner. The crown at Melbourne Park remains the only major title that Alcaraz has yet to claim, with his best finishes being quarter-final appearances in 2024 and 2025.

Should he triumph this year, he would surpass fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who was 24 when he completed his set of Grand Slam titles. The 22-year-old Alcaraz, who begins his quest against Australia’s 79th-ranked Adam Walton, is eager to get started.

“This is my main goal for the year,” Alcaraz said, having only participated in a light-hearted exhibition match against Sinner in South Korea as his warm-up.

“I’m just hungry for the title and ready to achieve a great result here. I’ve prepared well during pre-season to ensure I’m in good shape.”

When asked if he would trade victories at the other three majors for a single title in Melbourne, Alcaraz, smiling broadly, admitted he couldn’t choose.

“Completing the career Grand Slam is an amazing achievement, and being the youngest to do so makes it even better.”

There has been considerable attention on Alcaraz’s coaching team leading up to the tournament. In December, he announced an unexpected split from coach Juan Carlos Ferrero after seven successful years, with assistant Samuel Lopez stepping in.

Alcaraz explained that the decision was mutual and felt right.

“I’m confident in my current team. Practice has gone well, and I’m looking forward to the tournament.”
