The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the collision between the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State on May 20, 2026.

The Bureau has classified the incident as a Very Serious Marine Casualty and has deployed a marine investigation team to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and identify measures to prevent similar occurrences.

Following notification of the collision, the NSIB activated its marine occurrence response protocols and dispatched an investigation team to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to preserve evidence and begin preliminary investigative activities.

During the initial phase of the probe, investigators boarded both vessels and conducted interviews with the masters and key crew members. Relevant operational records and navigational data were also secured for analysis.

As part of the technical investigation, data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) aboard MV Maersk Valparaiso have been successfully downloaded for detailed forensic and navigational examination.

In line with the International Maritime Organization’s Casualty Investigation Code and Nigeria’s international obligations, the NSIB has formally notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau of Singapore, a substantially interested state in the matter, and has initiated collaboration with relevant local and international stakeholders.

The Bureau assured the public, maritime operators and the international maritime community that the investigation would be conducted independently and professionally, with the primary objective of identifying the causal and contributory factors behind the collision and enhancing maritime safety.

NSIB cautioned against speculation on the cause of the accident, stressing that it would be premature to draw conclusions while investigations remain ongoing.

The Bureau added that any urgent safety concerns identified during the investigation would prompt immediate safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents and strengthening safety standards within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
