Niger State has recorded a 91.49 per cent increase in its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) between 2024 and 2025, ranking fifth nationally in year-on-year growth, according to the 2026 State of States Report released recently by BudgIT.

The state’s IGR rose from N34.66 billion in 2024 to N66.37 billion in 2025, reflecting improved revenue administration and the impact of ongoing fiscal reforms.

Niger also ranked third nationally on Non-Tax Revenue growth between the years of 2024 and 2025, recording a 199.48 per cent increase from N10.28 billion in 2024 to N30.08 billion in 2025.

Tax revenue equally grew by 48.88 per cent, rising from N24.38 billion to N36.39 billion within the period.

The performance highlights improvements across the state’s major revenue streams and places the Niger State Internal Revenue Service (NGSIRS) among the better-performing state revenue agencies in the country.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday , the head of special duties in the Office of the executive chairman of NGSIRS, Aminu Mohammed Bawa, attributed the growth to institutional and statutory reforms; and stronger engagement with critical stakeholders.

He said the reforms focused on building staff capacity, automating tax administration, blocking revenue leakages and strengthening debt recovery. Bawa added that the introduction of a cashless policy had helped minimise revenue leakages, while tax audits and other legal measures were being deployed to improve debt recovery.

He also identified improved support from the state government, greater cooperation with its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and higher compliance rates from its taxpayers as the prevailing factors behind the revenue growth, providing the pivotal leadership and institutional support that drove the reforms

Bawa credited Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and the executive chairman of NGSIRS, Mohammed Madami Etsu, with providing the required guidance for the reforms to yield fruit.

He disclosed that the NGSIRS is on course to meet its IGR target of 100bn for the Year 2026.
