Chief press secretary to the Abia State governor, Ukoha Njoku-Ukoha, says the state government cannot thank the media enough for its professional and unbiased reportage of activities in the state.
Njoku-Ukoha stated this while speaking as a guest at the monthly congress of the Correspondents’ chapel of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Umuahia, the state capital.
He commended members of the council in general for their efforts in publicizing activities of the government, and thanked members of the chapel for their level of commitment to the efforts.
”If not for what you are doing, the world won’t be able to know what is happening in the state. You can do all these things, and when people don’t hear about it, it’s as good as not done.
“I’m pleased to appreciate you for taking the message of the good governance of the state outside the shores of the state, especially at the national level and also international level,” he said.
Speaking on the part of the Governor Alex Otti-administration in the state, the guest informed that it does not believe in lies, but has truth as its policy thrust.
”His Excellency is very firm about that. You shouldn’t go there and lie. You should say it, the way they are. When we make mistakes, the government can also take corrections.”
“And so that is the policy thrust of this particular government. And we will continue to work along that line,” according to him.
Welcoming the CPS, the chairman of the chapel, Comrade Steve Oko, noted that the members were pleased to have the CPS, whom he described as a friend of the chapel.
He said: “We will continue to give the government the needed publicity and would not shy away from also informing the government of the happenings in the state,”
”We believe and practice objectivity and will continue to uphold it tenaciously. We will praise the government when it is doing well and criticize it also when necessary.”
He requested the CPS to convince other political appointees of the governor, outside those in the media, to respond to enquires from journalists to enable them balance their reports.
