Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has promised to address the over five years power breakdown in Ohafia, his deputy’s local government area.
Otti gave the assurance at a grand civic reception organised in his honour by the Abiriba Communal Improvement Union (ACIU) in Aba yesterday.
Abiriba, like other communities in the area, has for the period, suffered huge economic consequences due to the breakdown as the challenge looked unsurmountable.
“We are working very hard to ensure that the entire Ohafia local government area begins to have power, not just power, but constant power,” he said.
He added that the government had engaged in discussions with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to acquire the Abia North and Umuahia ringed fence.
“In a few weeks from now, the discussion will not be with EEDC, because we are buying out Abia North and Umuahia ringed-fence from EEDC so that it will be within our control.
“We have made the offer already and we are in discussions. We will soon conclude it and take it over completely,” the governor further said.
He lauded the ACIU for the reception which he described as overwhelming and thanked it for the presentations which included a coaster bus to support the government.
The member representing Ohafia South constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mandela Obasi, expressed delight with the governor’s performance.
The PDP member explained that it would be out of order for him to say anything to the contrary because he belonged to a different political party.
Earlier in an address, the mayor of the area, Eleanya Ochu Kalu described the governor as a visionary, noting the governor had within two years changed the narrative of the state.
