The management of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, is set to source funds to augment its subvention from the government to clear the staff’s 34-month salary arrears.

The rector of the polytechnic, Haglar Okorie stated this while briefing newsmen in his office ahead of the forthcoming 11 and 12th convocation ceremony of the polytechnic.

He said the combined ceremony for over 28,000 students is coming 12 years after the last edition, adding that many activities have been lined up for the ceremony.“

“The polytechnic,” the rector said, “for the past 11 or 12 years has not organized a convocation ceremony for the graduating students. So, the need for it has become very necessary.”

“Already, the students and their parents are excited about this. In fact I have braced up to clear the arrears of convocation and then face the arrears of salaries.”

According to him, during the ceremony, some notable Nigerians, including Obinna Iyiegbu, who have distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavours will be honoured.

He lamented the drop in both students’ enrolment and population, noting that “many of them have switched over to private-polytechnics and this has seriously affected our inflow of revenue.”

While conducting the newsmen around some completed and ongoing projects at the campus, Okorie, announced his resolve to reposition and make the polytechnic the first among others in the country.
