Professor Zainab Duke-Abiola, widow of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, has responded to the recent admission by former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, in his memoir: “A Journey in Service”, acknowledging that her late husband won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, Duke-Abiola described the acknowledgment as an important moment in Nigeria’s history, one that affirmed a widely held truth and paved the way for national reconciliation and unity.

“I appreciate Nigerians and the international community who have, for over 30 years, stood by the truth of that historic mandate. My late husband, M.K.O Abiola, won an election widely regarded as one of the most credible in Nigeria’s history,” she said.

Prof. Duke-Abiola noted that while Babangida and Abiola shared a long-standing friendship, history is best served when facts are acknowledged.

She commended Babangida’s decision to publicly recognise the election results and emphasised the importance of reconciliation for national progress.

She recalled how Babangida and Abiola worked together on national development initiatives, often with the counsel of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other stakeholders.

“As a political participant myself, I appreciate the struggles and sacrifices made in the quest for democracy. I acknowledge the role played by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from our days in the People’s Front of Nigeria (PFN) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where my husband emerged as the presidential candidate alongside Baba Gana Kingibe as his running mate,” she stated.

She also recalled her personal political journey, including her experience as a governorship candidate and the challenges she faced at the time. Despite past differences, she expressed a commitment to looking forward with optimism.

“It is reassuring to see a renewed national discourse on June 12, and I believe that history will always recognize those who stood on the side of democracy,” she added.

Describing February 20, 2025, as a moment of reflection, she extended gratitude to President Tinubu for his dedication to national unity and governance.

“Let this moment be a step towards healing, unity, and the continued strengthening of our democracy. God bless Nigeria,” she said.
