Abuja is abuzz with anticipation as it prepares to host the 20th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG), a biennial sporting spectacle that brings together the crème de la crème of the nation’s energy sector.

Commencing on February 8th and running until the 14th, this year’s games hold particular significance, marking four decades of unparalleled unity and collaboration within the vital oil and gas industry.

An impressive contingent of no fewer than 1,200 athletes, representing various prominent companies within the sector, is expected to descend upon the Nigerian capital. These dedicated individuals will vie for glory across 13 diverse sporting disciplines, showcasing not only their athletic prowess but also the enduring spirit of teamwork and camaraderie that underpins the industry.

Engineer Sulaiman Sulaiman, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), articulated the profound importance of the games at the press conference held in Abuja yesterday. He emphasised that the competition serves as a powerful testament to the industry’s unwavering commitment to fostering teamwork, promoting employee wellness, and strengthening bonds among its vast workforce.

“These games are more than just a sporting event,” Engineer Sulaiman stated, “they are a vibrant celebration of the collective spirit and shared values that have driven the Nigerian oil and gas industry for forty years.”

The majority of the sporting events will unfold at the prestigious Moshood Abiola National Stadium, a fitting venue for such a grand occasion. However, the intricacies of the snooker competition will be expertly hosted at the E12 Club in Wuse, offering a dedicated arena for cue sport enthusiasts. In a strategic move to streamline the main programme, the golf event was successfully concluded last week, setting an early tone for the competitive spirit.

A formidable line-up of participating companies underscores the widespread engagement across the industry. Giants such as TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Seplat Energy, Oando, Shell, Nigeria LNG (NLNG), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Renaissance, Chevron, Aradel, and ND Western will all be represented, their teams ready to compete for top honours.

Engineer Sulaiman reiterated the LOC’s unwavering commitment to delivering a meticulously organised and truly memorable competition. He assured the Nigerian public that all necessary arrangements have been diligently put in place to guarantee a seamless and successful event. As the games draw to a close, outstanding performers will be recognised with a host of prestigious trophies, team honours, and individual awards, cementing their achievements in the annals of NOGIG history.
