A human rights activist, Barrister Emmanuel Umohinyang, has commended President Bola Tinubu for revamping the economy and making life meaningful to Nigerians.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos, Umohinyang, also the president of the Centre for Leadership and Justice, lamented that most state governors have not complemented the president’s efforts despite the huge allocation given to them.
He said the president wants the governors to impact the lives of their citizens, which is why he increased the allocation made available to them in the last two years. However, rather than using the money to impact the lives of those they govern, they engage in frivolous spending.
He noted that Nigerians’ challenges result from the government’s policy, which is the right step to take to improve Nigeria.
“I think the president is not celebrating Nigerians’ pain. He keeps reaching out to leaders to appeal to their people and say things will improve.
“Don’t forget that part of the challenges we have now is because Mr. President felt that the corruption in the fuel subsidy industry had to go.
“He also feels we should have a uniform dollar rate. That Emefiele is standing trial is a product of the shenanigans that were going on in the foreign exchange market, where they were recycling the dollar among themselves and then trading it on the black market and became billionaires. I feel those two indicators throw a lot of Nigerians into misery, but that is when things are improving and we are seeing it,” he said.
According to him, Nigerians need to ask the state governors what they have done with the allocation they received in the last two years, which he said is four times the amount they collected before the fuel subsidy was removed.
“Ask the governors what they are doing with the money they are getting. What have they done in their various states in the last two years?
