The factional leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has attributed the party’s performance in the recently concluded 2026 Abuja Area Council elections to alleged breaches of internal processes by some coalition partners.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the National Chairman of what he described as the “Authentic National Leadership” of the party, Nafiu Bala Gombe, expressed concern that certain coalition elements operated outside the party’s constitutional framework during the elections.
He said the development contributed to the party’s defeat at the polls.
Gombe also dissociated the party’s recognised leadership from an international press conference recently addressed by individuals he described as opposition elements claiming to represent the ADC.
“The authentic national leadership of the African Democratic Congress distances itself entirely from the international press conference held by these factions. They do not speak for our party,” he said.
The ADC chairman further criticised the group for allegedly accusing the National Assembly of exceeding its constitutional powers in relation to the proposed 2027 Electoral Act.
According to him, the National Assembly is constitutionally empowered to enact and amend electoral laws.
“The legislature is performing its constitutional responsibility. Rather than attacking the National Assembly, coalition partners should focus on properly formalising their relationship with our party,” he said.
Gombe also alleged that internal disagreements and power struggles had weakened the credibility of the dissenting group, adding that such actions had not attracted international support.
He called on party members and coalition partners to regularise their membership by registering at ward offices nationwide in order to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure.
“Politics should be about service and national development. We urge all genuine members to return and work towards rebuilding the party from the grassroots,” he added.
