Amid growing concerns over data depletion and billing transparency in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, Airtel Nigeria has intensified efforts to educate subscribers on data usage and improve consumer confidence through a fresh engagement initiative.
The telecom operator disclosed this in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP following the second edition of its Customer Forum themed, “Understanding Your Data and Taking Control 2.0,” held in Abuja.
The forum, which had representatives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in attendance, brought together customers, including high-volume data subscribers and 5G users, to discuss issues relating to data consumption, transparency and customer experience.
Speaking at the event, Airtel Nigeria’s chief executive officer, Dinesh Balsingh, represented by the company’s director of corporate communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, said trust remains critical to telecom operations, particularly as evolving digital lifestyles continue to drive higher data consumption.
According to him, the widespread use of smartphones, cloud services, video streaming platforms and emerging artificial intelligence applications has significantly altered data usage patterns, making transparency more important than ever.
“Discussions around data consumption have become increasingly important as digital lifestyles evolve, with smartphones, cloud services, video streaming and emerging artificial intelligence applications significantly influencing data usage patterns,” he said.
To address subscribers’ concerns, Balsingh said Airtel recently introduced its Data Calculator, a tool designed to help customers estimate their data requirements based on activities such as video streaming, online gaming, video calls and social media use.
“The purpose of the Airtel Data Calculator is to provide greater visibility, support informed decision-making and place more information directly in the hands of customers. Because transparency should never be viewed as a compliance exercise. Transparency is good business,” he stated.
He dismissed claims that telecom operators deliberately deplete customers’ data, insisting that Airtel has no business incentive to shortchange subscribers.
“Airtel has no incentive to shortchange subscribers through inaccurate billing, forced spending or unnecessary data depletion,” Balsingh added.
He further noted that the company has continued to invest in network infrastructure, fibre capacity, digital platforms, artificial intelligence systems and customer support channels to enhance service quality.
Also speaking, Airtel Nigeria’s director of customer experience, Oladokun Oye, said the customer forum was created to provide a platform for consumer education, engagement and direct feedback.
“Data has become central to everyday life, powering work, education, commerce, entertainment, healthcare and countless opportunities. As data usage grows, so too does the desire for greater visibility and understanding,” Oye said.
He explained that the engagement forms part of Airtel’s broader strategy to strengthen customer experience and promote transparency in service delivery.
The forum featured practical demonstrations on managing data consumption, device settings and user habits that influence data usage, while company officials responded directly to customers’ concerns.
The sensitisation programme followed the maiden edition held earlier this year in Lagos, as Airtel expands its consumer engagement drive amid increasing calls for accountability and transparency within Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
