Senate president Godswill Akpabio has been conferred with the prestigious International Peace Award by the Global Peace Movement International (GPMI) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to global diplomacy, peacebuilding and parliamentary excellence.
In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, the president of the Global Peace Movement International, Mike Uyi, praised Akpabio’s “visionary leadership” and “unwavering commitment to global cooperation and understanding. ” He emphasised the Senate president’s instrumental role in restoring Nigeria’s membership of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) – a diplomatic milestone the country had not achieved in over five decades.
“Global Peace Movement International is delighted to announce that Senator Godswill Akpabio, the esteemed Senate President of Nigeria, has been honored with the prestigious International Peace Award,” the statement read.
Uyi described Akpabio’s leadership as “monumental” and “transformative,” noting that his efforts have significantly elevated Nigeria’s international profile and influence within global parliamentary circles.
“This distinction is a testament to his exceptional leadership and vision as an Executive Member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and one of the esteemed Commissioners worldwide,” he said.
The award presentation is scheduled to take place in August 2025, marking a moment of international recognition for Akpabio and Nigeria’s renewed standing in global diplomacy.
Uyi emphasised that Senator Akpabio’s “tireless efforts in promoting peace, unity, and cooperation” have left a lasting legacy and are paving the way for a new generation of leaders.
