The factional crisis that led to the purported impeachment of the outgoing chairman of the Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the vice chairman has been resolved, LEADERSHIP learnt at the weekend.
The embattled chairman, Prof Emem Abraham, was reportedly removed by a faction of the association led by the secretary, Dr Usenobong Morgan, for alleged fraud and abuse of office, which Prof Abraham denied, blaming those who lost in the last branch election as stoking the crisis.
Addressing a press conference at the weekend at the Doctors’ Mess ahead of the association elections as her tenure runs full circle in July, 2024, Mrs Abraham explained that the resolution became necessary in order to put the crisis away and forge a common front for the election.
Thanking the national NMA for wading-in, she explained that the NMA national body resolved the crisis after deliberating on the report of a high-powered delegation sent to the state to investigate the matter and resolve it.
She noted that the national body in its resolution had passed a vote of confidence on her leadership, and also lifted the suspension placed on the secretary, Dr Useneobong Morgan, but referred him and other members of the association implicated in the crisis to the disciplinary committee which was set up by the State Executive Committee (SEC).
