Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron has become the first player to be sent off for covering his mouth during an on-field confrontation under FIFA’s new regulations.
Almiron received a straight red card in first-half stoppage time during Paraguay’s Group D clash against Türkiye after covering his mouth while appearing to direct comments at Turkish defender Mert Müldür. The decision was upheld following a VAR review.
The incident marked the first enforcement of a rule introduced by FIFA in April, which mandates a red card for players who conceal their mouths with a hand, arm or shirt while speaking during confrontations with opponents. The measure forms part of FIFA’s efforts to combat discriminatory and abusive language on the pitch.
Paraguay were leading 1-0 when Almiron was dismissed but held on to secure victory despite playing with 10 men.
The new regulation was introduced following controversy involving Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior earlier this year. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had defended the move, saying players with nothing to hide should have no reason to cover their mouths during confrontations.
