Deputy speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Okoye, has declared his interest to contest for the Awka-North/Awka-South Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general election.
He made his intentions known at a forum of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) support group known as “Anambra Patriots (APS).
He urged the members of the group to support his aspiration so that he would emerge as the APGA candidate during the party’s primary scheduled for May 23, 2026, stressing that he has the capacity to win the main election.
He reminded members of the support group that in the 2023 general election, he was the only APGA flag- bearer in the federal constituency who defeated the Peter Obi “wave” in the Labour Party (LP) to win under APGA.
“The Wave (of Peter Obi) is coming (in the 2027 election) just like in 2023. But I am confident of winning because I defeated his past wave. I am the only one (APGA) who defeated the wave in Awka-South and Awka-North federal constituency in 2023”, Okoye asserted.
On his performances as deputy speaker, Okoye said he has “signature projects” in each of the seven communities in his Awka-South 11 constituency.
He said, in addition to drilling water boreholes in some communities, including Nibo and Nise, he also secured jobs for over 50 constituents, including state and federal government positions.
He said further that he renovated a school in the Ezinato community, and funded perimeter fencing of a primary school in Nise to save the pupils from the dangers of herders.
He assured that he will touch more lives, bring further developments if elected into the House of Representatives.
He argued that by virtue of the fact that he is going into the National Assembly as a former Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly he would be treated as a “first timer ” but would be accorded a “ranking member” status, adding that as a ranking member he would be qualified to be appointed chairman of a committee of the House including a “juicy” committee.
In their respective speeches, the convener of the support group, Mr. Okey Ezeobi and chairman, Ozo Damian Ejiamatu emphasised that the commitment of the group was to ensure that only persons who will be accountable and provide good governance are elected into political positions in the state.
“Anambra Patriots is committed to making sure that anyone who will be elected into political position is someone who will provide accountability and good governance.
“We don’t want anyone seeking election to start selling his or her assets to have money to spend campaigning for support or votes. If the person sells his or her assets to win election, the person will not be accountable to the people because he or she will try to recover the money of those assets he or she sold.
“So, we, in Anambra Patriots have decided to screen every aspirant, anyone whom we find worthy we will take up the task of campaigning for the person; the person will not pay us any money because amongst us are very wealthy people who have volunteered to champion accountability and good governance in Anambra State”, Ejiamatu stated further.
