The candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the November Anambra State governorship election, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has promised to establish Apprenticeship Universities in major markets if he becomes governor.
He disclosed this during his interaction with the academics, and other senior staff members of all tertiary institutions in the state at the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka yesterday.
The YPP governorship candidate argued that the current academic curricula being used in the nation’s universities are no longer suitable for addressing human development challenges in the country.
Chukwuma said what is needed are academic curricula that teach skills acquisition and will drive innovation and creativity in various critical national development sectors.
He said, “Our current Universities academic curricula were fashioned after the pre-colonial administration system, so, they are not suitable for our modern time.
“After I am sworn in (because I am sure that I will be sworn in as the next governor of Anambra state), my administration will establish Apprenticeship Universities in all the majors markets.
“We will establish the University of Main Market, Onitsha; Nkwo Nnewi University; Ekwulobia Market University; etc. Our target will be for all the apprentices in the markets to acquire skills that will boost their manpower capacities”, Chukwuma stated.
He said N200billion will be earmarked by his administration to empower graduates to pursue their respective ventures
He also pledged to establish a “mini-grid” in each of the three senatorial districts to boost power supply for industrial growth.
Chukwuma said his administration will introduce a 3-Point development agenda tagged “HIS” which he explained will address the following core development sectors “Human Capital Development; Infrastructure and Security”.
