The dream of silverware came to a crushing end for Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) giants Kano Pillars on Wednesday, as they were sensationally knocked out of the President Federation Cup by lower-league opposition.

The Sai Masu Gida fell at the semi-final stage of the Kano State Federation Cup, losing 4-2 on penalties to ambitious Nigeria National League (NNL) side Bichi First FC.

In a tense, hard-fought encounter that failed to produce a goal in regulation time, both sides cancelled each other out in a keenly contested stalemate. Despite Kano Pillars’ superior top-flight experience and their fervent home support, they could not break down a resolute and well-organized Bichi First defense.

The underdogs, refusing to be overawed by their more famous neighbors, held their nerve throughout the 90 minutes to force the tie into a lottery of spot-kicks.

When the final whistle blew on a goalless regulation time, the match proceeded directly to penalties. There, the composure of Bichi First FC told the story.

While the NNL side converted four of their attempts with clinical precision, Kano Pillars buckled under the pressure, missing two crucial kicks to hand their opponents a famous victory and a place in the final.

The result marks a bitter repeat of history for Kano Pillars, who have now suffered back-to-back early exits in the prestigious national cup competition. Last year, the team’s campaign ended in disappointment at the round of 64, where they were narrowly edged out by a 1-0 scoreline against Rangers International at the Bwari Township Stadium in Abuja.

This latest defeat to second-tier opposition will undoubtedly raise fresh questions about the club’s mentality in knockout football, as they once again fall short of chasing domestic cup glory.
