Boniface Reflects On ‘Crazy Season’ As Bayer Leverkusen Return Confirmed

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has labelled the past year a “crazy season” after Werder Bremen confirmed he will return to parent club Bayer Leverkusen at the end of his loan spell.

The Nigerian forward is heading back to Leverkusen, where he has two years left on his contract, following an injury-hit and disappointing campaign at Bremen.

Boniface’s turbulent year began with a collapsed move to AC Milan last summer. After that deal fell through, Leverkusen who were willing to let him go after former coach Erik ten Hag deemed him surplus to requirements sent him on loan to Bremen to secure regular game time.

The club also stated that the loan was intended to help him regain fitness after injuries disrupted his 2024/25 season. However, the move backfired as Boniface struggled to earn a starting spot, mostly featuring as a substitute.

His fortunes worsened in December when a knee injury required surgery. Though he returned to full training last month, he has yet to play since recovering.

Ahead of Bremen’s final match of the season against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, the club announced Boniface would leave the Weserstadion and return to Leverkusen.

Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), the Nigerian thanked the club’s fans, staff, and players: “Wow. Crazy season for me, a lot has happened. Just want to say thank you very much to fans and staff and players.”

Boniface now rejoins Leverkusen with an uncertain future, as injuries have derailed the momentum he built during the club’s title-winning campaign two seasons ago.

He had briefly returned to Leverkusen for his knee rehabilitation before being cleared to rejoin Bremen for the remainder of the season.
