Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has credited the “god of soccer” after helping Celtic snatch the Scottish Premiership title in thrilling fashion on Saturday, capping a memorable debut season in Glasgow.

Celtic roared back from a goal down at Celtic Park to beat Hearts 3-1, sealing their 14th league crown in 15 years and denying the Edinburgh outfit a first championship since 1960.

Iheanacho came off the bench and made an instant impact, striking the post as Celtic piled on second-half pressure and shifted the momentum decisively in their favour.

Speaking to Celtic TV he said, “I’m happy. I’m so, so happy today. It was unbelievable,” he said. “At some point, everyone thought we had lost it. But the god of soccer was on our side and we won. We fought till the end. I can’t even express how I feel right now.”

Hearts had taken the lead through Lawrence Shankland’s first-half header, but Arne Engels equalised from the penalty spot in added time after a handball by Alexandros Kyziridis.

The winner arrived late in the second half when Daizen Maeda turned in Callum Osmand’s cross – VAR overturning an initial offside call to send the home crowd into delirium. Osmand then raced through to slot into an empty net as Hearts pushed desperately for an equaliser.

The 29-year-old described the campaign as one of the most extraordinary of his career, suggesting it was worthy of a documentary.

“This season has been a crazy, crazy season. It should be on a documentary,” Iheanacho said. “At the end, God crowned us with victory. So I’m so happy.”

He reserved special praise for the Celtic supporters, insisting the trophy meant even more because of them.

“This trophy is so, so special. I don’t know how many Celtic have won over the years, but this one should be called the drama trophy. It’s crazy,” he added. “The fans should enjoy it. The whole city of Glasgow should enjoy it. Hopefully, we’ll come back next season and be strong.”

The victory secured Celtic’s fifth consecutive Premiership title and a 56th Scottish league crown, moving them ahead of Rangers in the all-time standings.

Iheanacho finished the season with eight goals in 22 appearances, including several crucial interventions off the bench despite injury setbacks. His mid-season arrival proved pivotal as interim manager Martin O’Neill guided the club through a turbulent campaign.

Celtic now turn their attention to the Scottish Cup final, with a domestic double still within reach.
