‎A helicopter has crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with several people feared dead.

The incident occurred on Monday, causing panic among residents of the coastal community.

LEADERSHIP gathered that security personnel and emergency responders moved to the area.

The identity of the aircraft, number of people on board and confirmed casualty figures were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.

A source in the area said the helicopter crashed in a swampy part of the creek, making it difficult for residents to reach the scene.

“It happened this morning. We heard a very loud sound at the area where the incident happened, but we cannot get there because the place is a swampy area inside the creek. We are just looking at it from afar.

“But the police and the military people later came around there for rescue, but the occupants of the helicopter might have died there,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the command was aware of the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area.

Jimoh said efforts were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and urged residents to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information.

He said: “The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, October 5, 2026. Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue.

“The command urges members of the public, particularly residents of Igbokoda and adjoining communities, to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information. The public will be duly informed as soon as further credible information becomes available.”

The police spokesman said further details would be made public as the circumstances surrounding the incident become clearer.
