The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, announced on Thursday that he has returned and assumed the position of Speaker of the Assembly.
Obasa stated this after returning to the Assembly for the first time since after his impeachment on January 13.
“I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said after storming the Assembly complex on Thursday morning with Police and State Security Service operatives as escorts.
It was unclear how the politician arrived at the decision.
LEADERSHIP recalls that he was impeached on January 13 by an overwhelming majority of Lagos State lawmakers.
Obasa was replaced with Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who became the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Although Meranda has been unable to assume full control of the Assembly for some weeks, no fresh leadership election was held to reinstate Obasa who filed a lawsuit against his removal, but the courts were yet to decide on the matter.
The development marks the latest escalation in the political crisis that has engulfed the Lagos Assembly for several weeks.
