BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Halts Impeachment Proceedings Against Fubara, Odu

The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Thursday, suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

The motion to halt the process was moved at the resumed sitting of the House in Port Harcourt, effectively putting to rest a political crisis that has gripped the state since early January 2026.

The impeachment drive was initially launched amid escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current FCT Minister.

The proceedings were rooted in a long-standing power struggle over legislative control and budget approvals, which intensified after Fubara defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025.

Of the 32 members of the Assembly, 26 had signed the notice to invoke Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to remove the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.

Lawmakers accused Fubara of demolishing the Assembly complex without authorisation, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for legislators and State Assembly Service Commission, ignoring court rulings on financial autonomy, and making illegal appointments.

Earlier legal interventions slowed the impeachment process. On January 15, 2026, a Rivers State High Court issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker, Clerk, and Chief Judge from advancing the impeachment, pending further hearings.
