Bugaje, Ezekwesili, Others Oppose INEC Appeal On 2027 Election Timetable

The Movement for Credible Election (MCE) led by Dr Usman Bugaje and Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw its reported appeal against a court judgment nullifying aspects of its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

The group warned that pursuing the appeal could further erode public confidence in the electoral body and raise concerns about its neutrality ahead of the polls.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, through a statement signed by its chairman, Dr Usman Bugaje, co-chairman, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili; deputy chairman, Dr Bilikisu Magoro and head of National Secretariat, Olawale Okunniyi, the group argued that the judgment merely reaffirmed provisions of Section 29 of the Electoral Act.

According to the group, the court ruling by Justice Umar was declaratory in nature and did not impose fresh obligations on the electoral commission.

“The law allows political parties to submit their final list of candidates not later than 120 days before an election, and the judgment only restated this provision,” the group said.

MCE also questioned the need for early submission of candidates’ names, arguing that ballot papers are printed using party names and logos rather than candidates’ names.

The organisation maintained that compelling political parties to conclude primaries too early could create pressure on political actors, weaken internal democracy, and increase pre-election litigations.

The group further argued that public confidence in INEC remains fragile and cited survey findings suggesting low trust levels in the commission.

It cautioned that becoming involved in litigation over election timelines could create perceptions that the commission was no longer acting as a neutral regulator.

“INEC’s legitimacy derives from public trust, neutrality and fairness, not from appearing to act like an interested stakeholder,” the statement added.

The group called on the electoral commission to align its timetable with the provisions of the Electoral Act and focus on preparations for credible, inclusive and transparent elections in 2027.
